Decrees on slaughter of livestock

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority can instruct animal owners to cull livestock to eradicate contagious diseases in animals. The owner – or enterprise – might be eligible compensation for the livestock culled, as well as for costs related to the culling process or sanation efforts.

    The compensation scheme is legislated by means of by-law: (NO) Forskrift om erstatning etter offentlige pålegg og restriksjoner i plante- og husdyrproduksjon.

    When the Norwegian Food Safety Authority imposes slaughter of livestock, the owner might also be entitled to compensation for expenses related to sanation measures undertaken by his or her enterprise upon complying with the culling of the livestock.

    Examples of such measures are:

    -          Cleaning and disinfection

    -          Eventual destruction of machines, livestock facilities and/or constructions

    The intention of the compensation is to reduce financial losses; not to cover all expenses associated with the decree.

    Applications by post: See form in the menu to the left. The completed form together with the necessary documentation must be sent to the county administration where the claimant resides.

    For cattle, poultry, small animals and pigs, the compensation is as by standardized rates according to the by-law. Loss of cats, dogs or pets is not compensated: (NO) Forskrift om erstatning etter offentlige pålegg og restriksjoner i plante- og husdyrproduksjon.
